Photography: A. Soskin, © The Eretz Israel Museum Collection, Tel Aviv
This landscape image, taken on April 11th 1909, captures the dunes of Kerem Jebali on the outskirts of Jaffa. In the center, a group of western looking characters are dividing 66 plots to each family represented. This surreal event is actually the first step towards the foundation of Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew-Metropolis, right on top of those sands.
This photo, taken exactly a hundred and eight years ago by Avraham Soskin, the photographer most identified with the beginning of Tel Aviv. Over the years, Soskin was also Rudi’s mentor. The two shared a special friendship and Soskin permitted the reproduction of some of the best photos from his collection to Rudi’s archive. This photo, known as “The Division of The Plots” is one of those reproduced images.
On the archive’s 80th year, we are honored to show and recognize this iconic image
