Ahad Ha'am (1856-1927) | Writer and intellectual, one of the leading thinkers of Zionism and founder of the Spiritual Zionist movement. Born Asher Zvi (Hirsch) Ginzberg in Skwira, Ukraine, to a Hasidic family and raised in Odessa. He studied Talmud, philosophy, sciences and languages as an autodidact. He was one of the leaders of the "Love of Zion" movement, participated in the "Katowice Conference" and founded the journal "HaShilohat", which served as an intellectual platform for discussion of Zionist thought and Jewish culture. In his seminal article "This is not the way!", which he first signed as "Ahad Ha'am", he presented Judaism as a national-cultural identity with a connection to tradition. He saw Israel as a solution to the spiritual and cultural problem of the Jewish people, not as a physical refuge, and argued that one should not immigrate to the land until a national-spiritual center based on cultural and moral foundations had been developed in Zion. Ahad Ha'am founded the secret organization "Bnei Moshe" for spiritual training, worked to establish the Technion, promoted the spread of the Hebrew language and helped achieve the Balfour Declaration. In 1922, he immigrated to Israel and lived in Tel Aviv, on a street that was named after him during his lifetime.
