Sir Moses Chaim Montefiore (1784-1885) | English Jewish banker, philanthropist and lobbyist. He dedicated his life to protecting the rights of Jews around the world and to developing settlement in Israel. He was born in Livorno, Italy, to a wealthy Spanish family based in England. He amassed a huge fortune in the trade and insurance business and married into the Rothschild family. At the age of 40, he retired from his commercial activities and devoted his time to public work. He founded a fund to support Jewish settlement and headed the "Committee of the Communities" - the representative body of English Jewry. He often used his lineage, status and connections to help persecuted Jewish communities around the world. Montefiore visited Israel seven times and contributed greatly to the advancement of Jewish settlement in the country. He established residential homes, medical services, workshops, agricultural enterprises, schools and more. In Jerusalem, he financed the construction of the first neighborhood outside the walls of the Old City - "Mishkenot Sha'ananim". In 1846, he was awarded the title of "Sir" by Queen Victoria, and among the Jews he became known as "Minister Montefiore". He died in England, at the age of 100.
