65.00 ₪Max Nordau (1849-1923) | Philosopher, writer, physician and journalist. One of the fathers of the Zionist movement, one of the leaders of the political Zionist movement and the father of the vision of “muscular Judaism”. Born in Hungary as Shimon Maximilian Seidfeld. He studied medicine and later lived and worked as a journalist in Berlin, Paris, Madrid and London. He became known as a sharp critic and a great thinker in the fields of society, religion and art. He published his various writings under the pen name Max Nordau. In 1895 he became acquainted with Benjamin Ze’ev Herzl and his ideas regarding the establishment of a state for the Jews and began to take an active part in Zionist congresses. He served as vice president and president of the Zionist Congress and coined the term “muscular Judaism”: shaping the image of the new Jew as one with physical and mental strength, through which he will fulfill the vision of Zionism, restore the image of the diaspora Jew and help prevent anti-Semitic phenomena. His vision had a great influence and, among other things, he accelerated the establishment of Jewish sports associations. In 1903, Nordau survived an assassination attempt due to his support for the Uganda Plan. In 1923, he died while visiting Paris. His remains were brought to Israel in 1926.
