-
From the 1990s, millions have embarked on journeys across the Mediterranean Sea, with hope to reach safe havens in Europe. Dark Waters, inspired by personal stories of refugees who have lost loved ones at sea, presents a story that goes far beyond a documentation of the current crisis and into the realms of the metaphorical representation of the sea and of water. It is the nature of water to oppose the rigidity of borders, with open horizons brimming with opportunity. Dark Waters is ultimately a reflection of the power of human hope, whether it materialised, or was in vain.

DANIEL TCHETCHIK | PHOTOGRAPHER

Born in Israel in 1975, Daniel Tchetchik is a photographer and the founder and chief editor of “Haaretz” newspaper’s renowned photography blog. He has displayed his personal works in leading museums, galleries and publications in Israel and abroad.

Using photography to investigate his natural surroundings, Tchetchik's art deals with the search for visual representations and reflections of contemporary emotions in landscapes and people. Presenting his works in two different platforms - exhibited in series' and published in artist books - allows him to change the narrative of a single image.

Tchetchik often works with analog film that has been exposed to radiation and kept in harmful conditions in order to reveal features of the photographic practice and the subject matter.

Tchetchik currently lives in Tel Aviv and works in Israel and abroad, dividing his time between his artistic practice projects and documentary assignments.
