The first Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel, one of the fathers of religious Zionism and one of the most influential rabbis of the 20th century. Born in Latvia. In 1904, Rabbi Kook immigrated to Israel in order to serve as rabbi of the city of Jaffa. During the First World War he served as a rabbi of a community in London, where he worked, among other things, to approve the Balfour Declaration. In 1919 he returned to Israel and was appointed rabbi of Jerusalem. In 1921 he was one of the initiators of the establishment of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and was even elected to head it, as the Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi. In 1924, he founded the first Zionist yeshiva - the Rabbi Center Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Rabbi Kook saw Zionism as the embodiment of the process of redemption of the people of Israel in his country, and therefore acted as a public leader for the unity of the people through progressive rulings, bridging cultural gaps and bringing together the secular pioneers. His thought combined Halacha, Kabbalah and philosophy, and dealt in depth with Jewish existence in the modern era. Rabbi Kook's character and work influence to this day the character of the State of Israel in general and religious Zionism in particular. Died at the age of 69 from cancer.
